Head of Institutions Trained On Leadership, Corporate-Building Skills

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Management Development Institute (MDI) last Friday held a three-day training workshop on leadership and corporate-building skills for heads of institutions, at Sindola Safari Lodge, Kanilai.

The training that drew participants from key head of institutions across the country was designed to give opportunities to brush up on leadership fundamentals, so as to give the participants the opportunity to network, share experience, best practices and problem-solving, in order to chart the best way forward in managing their respective organisations for the socio-economic development of the country. In his opening remarks, Dawda Fadera, the permanent secretary of PMO, who also doubles as MDI's board chairperson, deputising for the secretary-general and head of the Civil Service and minister of Presidential Affairs, said the capacity-building training is designed for the hard working heads of institutions. He assured them that SG Sabally and his office has been working day in, and day out with the MDI in making the initiative possible. PS Fadera revealed that the government of The Gambia has put together a series of ambitious, credible and innovative development initiatives within Vision 2020. He further stated that the Programme for Accelerated Growth and Employment and other development initiatives potentially had the capacity to propel the country to a rapid socio-economic development, noting that a lot have been achieved.

The permanent secretary of PMO maintained that without these capacities little would be achieved, noting that in the past these efforts had been geared primarily towards the main civil service.

PS Fadera, who described the participants as vital service-providers necessary for the development of the country, stated that their participation is a significant step to ensure that together they can bring a balanced leadership capacity-building in the country. The training, he affirmed, is necessary to create an effective and competent public service that will pull in one direction of good delivery of high quality services for the people.

Delivering the closing remarks, Njundu Fatty, the CEO of Lasting Solution, maintained that leadership and corporate-building skills is a laudable initiative, which Management Development Institute has taken to bring together corporate leaders from various public enterprises. This, according to him, has given all participants the opportunity to interact, discuss, brainstorm, socialise and know each other at personal level, adding that such informal setting is essential for networking.

Fatty emphasised that the participants have leadership responsibilities, not only for their corporate but also for the people of the country. The workshop, Fatty added, has helped them to capacitise the participants to be making better decisions and leadership to make the country developed.

The CEO of Lasting Solution thanked the MDI for coming up with such a wonderful initiative.

Deputising for the director general of MDI, Sukai Gaye, the Human Resource director, described the training as valuable and timely, saying without this mindset and commitment to professional standards, resource management, resource mobilisation and social intervention, reforms development cannot be effectively executed for efficient service delivery.

She noted that the government of The Gambia has recognised the role of the civil service in national development and that the President of the Republic has on many occasions affirmed his government's commitment to achieving the goals stated in Vision 2020. She told the gathering that, the success and attainment of these goals depend to a large extent on the performance of the civil service. The Gambia's civil service, Gaye added, must therefore undergo reforms, which will then transform it into a sector. He said thus as leaders of most important institutions in The Gambia, much is expected from them to transform and manage change, in order to bring more efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of service projects and products.

Alhaji Sillah Conateh, the course coordinator, stated that MDI could surmount the capacity challenges facing the public sector. Thus, he noted, the challenge for all is to be goodwill ambassadors of MDI and her professional network of trainers. The course coordinator disclosed that MDI is currently focusing on her core mandate of training the public and private sector in The Gambia on temporary management skills, in order to prepare them for a more productive output. Conateh assured that the participants would take great benefits from the training, as he thanked Gamcel/Gamtel, Lasting Solution, DHL Gambia and ICM UK for their unflinching support in making the training more successful.
