H5N1 bird flu virus found in 2 poultry farms in Pakistan+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)ISLAMABAD, March 21_(Kyodo) _ Pakistan confirmed Tuesday that a virus found in birds in two poultry farms in the Northwest Frontier Province last month was the deadly H5N1 type, but said steps have been taken to prevent it from spreading, a local television reported.
The private GEO television quoted a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture as saying the samples taken from birds at the two farms in Charsada and Abottabad showed they were infected with the H5N1 virus.
It is reportedly the first time that the H5N1 virus has been detected in the country.
The two farms were immediately quarantined and nearly 25,000 birds were burnt and buried after the owners reported sudden and massive deaths among them.
"We are continuously watching if there is another outbreak elsewhere. So far no new farm or bird has been found infected with the disease anywhere in the country," ministry spokesman Mohammad Afzal was quoted as saying.
The ministry has also asked the farms to step up vaccination of their birds and immediately report anything abnormal, Afzal reportedly said.
The H5N1 can jump to humans and over 100 people have died worldwide since late 2003, according to the World Health Organization.
