Guthrie Memorial updates technology standards [The Evening Sun, Hanover, Pa. :: ]

(Evening Sun, The (Hanover, PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 23--Guthrie Memorial Library has entered into a three-year agreement with York County Library System and improvements have been in the works since the day the agreement was signed in February.

Already the library has welcomed state-appointed co-director Deborah Van de Castle, created a fundraising committee, conducted an energy and technology audit and installed a new network server.

While these things are important for the library to run more effectively, Van de Castle said, there are no physical changes for the public to see, so people aren't sure how the action plan is progressing.

But a big technological update will make it easier for patrons to see that things are changing for the better at Guthrie Memorial, she said.

Over the next two weeks, the county system's IT department plans to install 70 new HP computers throughout the public labs, staff stations, catalogue stations and card registries, said IT Director Todd Stevens. Each computer, including the software update, costs roughly $750, Stevens said.

"This is all state-of-the-art stuff," he said. "If you took the Hanover library as a snapshot for the entire system, they went from having the slowest and oldest technology to having the newest and fastest in the system." The $58,000 project is covered in half by Hanover Borough and half by York County Library System. Any future repairs or replacements will be paid for by the county system, Van de Castle said.

"I think people look to the library to have cutting-edge technology, to be able to supply information in the quickest, most efficient way and to get people the information they need in a timely manner," she said. "This update is going to help us do that." Other tech updates scheduled for installment this year include self-service printing and automated time limits for computer use.
