Guj business process outsourcing companies hire more from small towns

(Ecomonic Times, The (India) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Oct. 9--AHMEDABAD, India -- With severe manpower shortage in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector and increased demand for regional voice-based services in Gujarat's metros, call centre firms are now travelling to nearby districts in pursuit of manpower.

The call centre firms in the city are increasingly recruiting people from places such as Gandhidham, Vapi, Bharuch, Kutch, Bhuj and others to cater to an increasing manpower demand. If the firms can hire people from these towns at relatively low costs, these executives are also found to be more loyal to their employers, feel industry experts.

"A few of our clients serve products for Tier-III and rural markets. So, we hire executives who can speak English as well as Gujarati and Hindi to cater to our clients requirements," says Dushyant Joshi of Ahmedabad-based call centre Azure. The company has recently recruited over 40 people from Tier-III towns in Gujarat including Gandhidham, Vapi and Bhuj.

"As companies across industry sectors such as telecom or retail are enhancing presence, the need for domestic voice-based service agents is also rising. Many call centre firms serving domestic clients are recruiting from Tier-III cities and offering them accommodation and several other facilities to retain them," says Anupam Saxena of Infocity. But some are also going to these places for recruiting English-speaking executives for their voice-based service centres.

"We have recruited a few executives from nearby districts through job fairs. But as we only serve interna-tional clients, we mainly recruit good English-speaking executives from these places," says Parth Bhatt, human resource generalist of Effective Teleservices.

However, some sections of the industry still find it difficult to get the desired manpower from these towns. "The tier-III towns are picking up in non-voice based services such as legal outsorucing. But while these executives are good in regional languages, English is still an issue," says Nirja Sharma, head-HR at Motif.
