Greater Richmond Technology Council Announces 2008 Technology Awards Winners

RICHMOND, Va. --(Business Wire)-- Corporate and community leaders, entrepreneurs, and technology innovators won awards in seven technology-related categories at the GRTC's 13th Annual Awards Gala on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Richmond (VA) Marriott.



The Greater Richmond Technology Council (GRTC) announced its 2008 Technology Awards winners at a gala, sponsored by Capital One, last night at the Richmond Marriott. The gala, attended by hundreds of technology and community leaders, celebrated the best and brightest in the central Virginia tech sector, recognizing achievements that are vital to the growth of the region's tech economy.

IBM's Leadership Award recognizes individual leadership in fostering positive technology-related initiatives in central Virginia. Winning the award:



-- David R. Lohr, Executive Director, Virginia Biosciences Development Center

The Virginia Biotech Research Park has put Richmond on the map as a mid-Atlantic center of innovation in bioscience. Dave Lohr is a key catalyst of that effort as Executive Director of the Incubation Program at the Park, helping more than 60 companies develop commercially viable new technologies in life-science. His work to help create the new Virginia-Israel Biotech Commercialization Center has made Richmond a global player in biotechnology.

Computer Resource Team's Educator Award is presented to the educator that provides exceptional technology leadership, and encourages students to pursue higher education or training in engineering, math, and the sciences. Winning the award:

-- Steve Wagner, Highland Springs High School

Steve's goals as a teacher have always been to challenge students with open-ended projects, giving them the skills and confidence to complete them, teaching them to think critically and creatively in search of innovative solutions. Steve also instills discipline and respect in his students, equipping them for rewarding lives and careers.

SyCom Technologies' IT Builders Award is given to the IT services provider that demonstrates an outstanding ability to deliver technology-enabled business transformation to its internal and/or external clients. Winning the award:

-- Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA)

VITA has transformed the Commonwealth's IT infrastructure through an innovative public-private partnership, providing measurable benefits to Virginia citizens by ensuring the security of citizen data, wisely spending tax dollars, making government services more reliable, and spurring economic development in local communities across the state. Accepting the award for VITA is Lem Stewart, CIO.

Cherry Bekaert & Holland's Emerging Company Award recognizes the local technology company whose recent growth in revenues and/or employees, accomplishments, and prospects have shown the company's ability to achieve commercial success. Winning the award:

-- Synergy Systems, Inc.

Synergy Systems is dedicated to synchronized enterprise - creating the customized environment in which companies can proactively respond to workforce, supply-chain, inventory, and other needs in an automated and coordinated way. They are innovators who will forever change the way manufacturers, retailers, service centers, and suppliers conduct their business

Data Synapse's Technology Innovation Award is given to the company whose new technology or use of technology holds significant promise. Winning the award:

Obetech aims to diagnose, prevent, and treat obesity caused by adenovirus-36, a common human virus. They sell diagnostic tests that determine adenovirus-36 infection, and are developing vaccines for prevention and anti-virals for treatment of virus-induced obesity.

Northrop Grumman's Community Support Award recognizes the organization or corporate division whose involvement in the community has enhanced the Greater Richmond community, and added to the company's and the region's quality of life. Winning the award:

Strategic Staffing Solutions' Technology SkillBuilder Award is presented to the institution or organization that executes its mission by integrating and promoting technology as an integral part of the learning or work experience. Winning the award:

TecAccess has launched a one-of-a-kind Disabled Veterans (DVET) initiative driven by a partnership between private industry and government agencies nationwide. TecAcess' DVET program implements an innovative approach, offering professional training and job opportunities for disabled veterans nationwide.

The GRTC's 2008 Chairman's Award, sponsored by Altria Client Services Inc., winner was also announced at the Gala. The award went to Robert J. "Bob" Stolle, the former Executive Director of the GRTC, now Executive VP at Core Consulting. Stolle was recognized for his contributions to the central Virginia technology economy during his 10 year tenure as GRTC Executive Director.
