GRANTS TO FURTHER BREAST CANCER RESEARCH
(New Zealand Press Association Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Wellington, Jan 31 NZPA - Three New Zealand doctors with an interest in breast cancer have received over $100,000 worth of research grants for study during 2006.
The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation has given the grants to Auckland Hospital's Dr Gail Tsang ($50,000), Dr Jo Perry from Auckland's Liggins Institute ($50,000) and New Plymouth surgical registrar Dr Susan Gollop ($5000).
Dr Tsang, a senior registrar in radiation oncology, will analyse the outcome of radiotherapy treatment in about 4000 breast cancer patients treated in Auckland Hospital over the past few years.
She said the study aimed to identify factors that could place patients at high risk of relapse, who need aggressive treatment, and factors that result in high complication rates.
Dr Perry has worked in London and Melbourne over the past 12 years with leading breast cancer researchers.
She said a specialised group at Auckland's Liggins Institute would aim to increase efficacy of breast cancer treatment.
Dr Gollop will research why women in Taranaki who are suitable for breast conservation treatment (BCT) choose to have mastectomies.
She said there were several possible reasons including fear of recurrence, lack of local radiotherapy facilities or partner's preference.
Results of the project ahead would be valuable for education, counselling and treatment of women with breast cancer who are offered the choice of mastectomy or BCT in similar regions and environments both in New Zealand and overseas.
