Government Given One Month to Finalise Treason Probe
Kampala, Feb 14, 2012 (The Monitor/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --
Court has given the state one month to finalise investigations into treason allegations against three Forum for Democratic Change supporters in connection with walk-to-work protests.
Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court yesterday ordered the state to speedup the investigations against FDC women leader Ingrid Turinawe and her co-accused, Sam Mugumya, a political assistant to Kizza Besigye (party president), and Francis Mwijukye, head of the FDC Youth Wing.
"This should be the last adjournment and the state should make sure that by this time, investigations must be completed," held Magistrate Esta Nambayo before adjourning the case to March 12.

Court also heard that the case file against the trio was before the Directorate of Public Prosecutions pending perusal and final advice.
The court decision was reached after the accused persons' lawyer, Mr Ernest Kalibbala, asked for the dismissal of the case. "My prayer is that this should be the last adjournment and if state has no evidence, it should stop this case," Mr Kalibbala said. But State Attorney Beatrice Odongo asked court for more time because investigations are still on.
Ms Turinawe, Mr Mwijukye and Mr Mugumya appeared before court for mentioning of their case and their bail was extended to March 12. The three are part of the 15 opposition supporters whom the police chief, Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura, last year said were arrested in relation to planning walk-to-work protests and that they would be charged with treason.
Mr Mwijukye has since complained of harsh bail conditions that confine him to his village home in Ankole region, western Uganda, from where he must seek permission whenever he is travelling out of the region. According to the charge sheet, the suspects allegedly mobilised the launching of simultaneous riots countrywide until government is overthrown.
