Google rolls out voice search service

BEIJING, Nov 03, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Google China announced on Monday the launching of its Chinese voice search services for mobile phones, expecting its mobile search services to eventually exceed those based on computers.

Voice searches operate by using voice recognition technology to interpret a person's voice, process the data, and return an appropriate query result.

The service is suitable for 46 Nokia handset models so far, and will be made compatible with Google's Android and Apple's iPhone platforms.

Mobile Internet will be the next growth point for China's enormous Internet industry, and is a key strategic direction for Google China, said Lin Bin, an official from the company.

According to statistics released by market research firm Analysys International, the search traffic from handsets in China exceeded 270 million queries in the second quarter of this year, double the same period of 2008, with Google and Baidu.com respectively taking up 26.6 percent and 26 percent market share.

Google's introduction of mobile phone voice search services put pressure on China Telecom's (0728.HK; CHA.NYSE) Best Tone, a value added service based on the telecom operator's directory assistance business, and China Mobile's (0941.HK; CHL.NYSE) 12580 service, a voice calling service providing information on catering, entertainment, tourism, weather, and transportation, and offering booking services for hotels and tickets.
