Google: Brazil among the most interesting emerging markets
(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)US internet search company Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) sees Brazil as one of the most interesting countries among the emerging markets, local newspaper Gazeta Mercantil quoted Google representatives as saying at a press conference in So Paulo.
Brazil's position in the IT market is very good compared to the emerging economies that make up the Bric group (Brazil, Russia, India and China), Google's founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page were reported as saying.
This is due both to a lack of legal, cultural and censorship barriers and to Google's dynamism in the country, they added.
The internet and broadband has grown very fast in the country and has room for more growth, according to the executives.
Despite only 11% of the population having direct access to computers or access to Google services, Brazil has intensive internet use, with users staying connected for long periods, and high interest in new resources available on the net, according to Google.
Online community website Orkut, created by Google, is a case in point. Brazil has some 70% of Orkut's global registered users. However, Google has not yet discovered ways to generate business from the site.
Following the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Sergey Brin and Larry Page arrived in Brazil on Sunday. Brazil is one of the countries where their business has been growing the fastest.
In July 2005, Google purchased Brazilian software company Akwan Information Technologies, one month after starting its local sales office. Akwan is now Google's research and development center in Latin America.
Google, with offices in Mexico and Brazil, is the world's largest search engine and is one of the five most popular sites on the internet, according to the company.
