Going green is good, but eco-friendly cell phones?

Oct 05, 2009 (South Florida Sun-Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune News Service via COMTEX) -- By now most of us know "going green" is the way to go when making shopping choices.

Need an appliance? Make sure it has the Energy Star label. Looking for a new car? Go hybrid.

But what about going green when buying your next cell phone? Sprint and Samsung released a new mobile phone that makes that option a real choice.

Made from corn: The Reclaim smartphone recently dropped on the market and Sprint is boasting how it's made from 80 percent recyclable materials, specifically bio-plastics derived from good ol' corn. Sounds great. Makes you wonder why cell phone manufacturers (and farmers) didn't come up with this sooner.

More green features: The phone charger is Energy-Star approved. Even the apps are green. The phone comes pre-loaded with apps from Discovery Channel, including guides to help you live a more eco-friendly lifestyle and a glossary providing explanations about climate changes.

Green or not, the Reclaim is also all smartphone, replete with full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS-enabled turn-by-turn directions, Web browser, automatic speech recognition and a 2.0 megapixel camera with 3X zoom and video camcorder. All for $50 (with standard two year phone contract).
