Global SRN Obtains IRS Non-Profit Status, Buoying Role as Objective Financial Services Sourcing Forum

The Global Sourcing Research Network (Global SRN), a member-driven organization of financial services industry executives and scholars founded at Duke University, has been awarded non-profit business association status by the Internal Revenue Service.

"This designation affirms Global SRN's role as an impartial forum to explore, share and shape best practices in the fast-paced global sourcing of business services," said Michael Monaghan, chair of the Global SRN Advisory Forum. "Our status will now allow us to pursue industry foundation funding to research additional topics that support our members' interests."

Global SRN conducts industry research and facilitates the exchange of market insights through roundtable meetings and webinars on topics spanning governance and vendor management to workforce strategy and automation. Members include Fortune 100 banking, financial services and insurance firms.

The organization was founded in 2004 as the Offshoring Research Network at Duke's Fuqua School of Business. Duke ORN conducted global surveys on offshoring practices that resulted in reports, news articles, commissioned studies, education programs and advisory engagements.

In 2011, Duke ORN launched roundtables to address the interests of financial services sourcin executives. The organization spun off from Duke in 2016 and, after rebranding as Global SRN, the IRS this spring designated the organization a non-profit business association under IRC 501 (c)(6).

Raleigh-based Global SRN continues to work with Duke-affiliated scholars and is building relationships with additional institutions, including New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business.

"Global SRN provides the kind of depth of knowledge about issues pertaining to global sourcing and automation that I value greatly as an academic," said Natalia Levina, professor of information systems at NYU Stern who worked with Duke ORN founder Arie Lewin, professor emeritus of strategy and international business at Duke, since 2007. "I hope to foster collaboration opportunities for research and teaching with Global SRN practice leaders."

Ted Botzum, an industry executive who serves on the Global SRN leadership team, said collaborations among industry experts are particularly valuable during a time of rapid technological change.

"Global SRN is in a unique position to support and inform the industry because we advance the continuous discovery and exchange of data that practitioners can apply directly toward both daily and strategic decision-making," Botzum said.
