GAEC launches Technology and Transfer and Marketing Centre [Ghana News Agency]

(Ghana News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Accra, July 23, GNA - The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) on Wednesday launched its Technology and Transfer and Marketing Centre (TTMC) to serve as an interface between the various Institutes under the Commission and the private sector.

The Centre would be beneficial to both the Commission and the private sector in ways such as providing access to intellectual property protection for inventors, partnering with private companies to leverage resources, as well as stretch resource budget and share ideas in protected environment.

It would also help in accessing financial schemes for local inventors and generating income from already existing research works.

Professor Benjamin Jabez J. Nyarko, Director-General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission said the establishment of the Centre became possible with a World Bank grant of 500,000 United States dollars.

This,he said was channeled through, the Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), the  Ghana Technology and Skills Development Fund and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI).

He said the project, which would be implemented over a two-year period, adopts the market-driven approach to science and technology research at GAEC through the establishment of the TTMC.

Key activities of the Centre would include identifying and training of technology commercialization focal persons in each Institute under the Commission to coordinate the commercialization activities of the Institutes with the TTMC, provision of offices to house TTMC staff and orientation of Scientists and Directors of Institutes, to the new approach to innovation through short training courses in commercialization and marketing.

Prof.Nyarko said the theme of the launch "Making GAEC more responsive to the demand of the private sector in Ghana," would ensure that scientific research findings and technologies are converted to commercially viable products.

"In this way the products and efforts of our researchers can obtain increased visibility and value", he said.

He assured the World Bank, COTVET and MESTI that findings of scientists within the Commission's domain would be readily available to TTMC for onward transmission to the private sector to aid in the development of Ghana's economy.

He further gave the assurance that being a nuclear Institution, it would be mindful of the safety and security of the entire project.

He urged all its staff and stakeholders to contribute towards the attainment of the objectives of the centre.

Mr Akwesi Opong-Fosu, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, said there has been major criticisms of scientific research institutions that the results generated from researches end up on their shelves and in libraries without any link to entrepreneurial development, production and commercialization.

He expressed the hope that the Centre would help in addressing the problem and link research to commercialization so that research results could impact positively on the country's socio-economic development and on the lives of ordinary people.
