Funeral set for former College Station councilman J.R. 'Dick' Birdwell

Apr 05, 2012 (The Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. for a lifelong Aggie who served three terms as College Station councilman and continued to be active in the community throughout his later years.

J.R. "Dick" Birdwell, 81, died Wednesday due to heart failure at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He and his wife, Joyce, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary two days before his death. The couple has five children and 12 grandchildren.

His funeral will be at Covenant Presbyterian Church in College Station.

Birdwell was elected as College Station councilman for three terms, serving two consecutive terms from 1988 to 1992 and a third from 1996 to 1998.

According to his biography on the Aggie Network website, Birdwell grew up in Aggieland and graduated from A&M Consolidated High School before going on to earn his engineering degree from Texas A&M.

While an undergrad student, Birdwell served as a Ross Volunteer and a battalion commander in the Corps of Cadets. He later went on to earn a master's degree from his alma mater.

He worked most of his career for the Dow Chemical Company, and for 17 years he was in charge of designing and constructing chemical plants in the U.S. as well as abroad.

Birdwell retired in 1986 after 26 years with Dow. By then, he had been named general manager of Dow Louisiana as well as vice president of several company branches.

The faithful Aggie frequently sent in letters to the editor for publication in The Eagle.

In his last letter, published on Dec. 9, 2011, he urged residents to participate in early voting.

Family members asked those interested in making a donation in his honor to do so with their favorite charity or his preferred choice, the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.

____ --Editors Note: The original version of this story said Dick Birdwell was a former College Station mayor. Birdwell served three terms as a City Council member.
