'French operators likely to allow m-VoIP this year - report'
Feb 08, 2010 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) --
Mobile VoIP is expected to come to France before the end of the year,
writes 01net. Bouygues Telecom may be the first to allow the technology
over its network as early as the second quarter, coinciding with the
release of the Apple iPad. France's three existing mobile network
operators, Orange, SFR and Bouygues, forbid the use of VoIP over their
3G networks at present, but stated that they were studying the issue.
Orange is said to be planning VoIP for the end of the year, and SFR is
also expected to do so this year. Mobile network licence winner Free
Mobile told 01net that it plans to offer mobile VoIP when it launches
services at the start of 2012, allowing customers to use third-party
VoIP platforms from the outset. The country's other operators may
prefer to develop their own solutions to counter rivals such as Skype.
French telecommunications regulator Arcep has formed a working group on
net neutrality, whose agenda includes mobile VoIP. It will consult
mobile operators, ISPs and "internet giants". Arcep plans to publish
guidelines on the matter in June.
