French company to build hydroelectric station in French Guiana
(Associated Press WorldStream Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico_A French renewable energy company plans to build a hydroelectric station in French Guiana that could boost the country's power supply.
Voltalia, based in a Paris suburb, will build the station along the Mana river in northern French Guiana, relying only on the river's current _ not dammed water _ to produce electricity, according to a statement on the company's Web site. Construction is expected to start in the next few months.
Earlier this year, Voltalia signed a 20-year, US$48.4 million (33 million) contract with Electricite de France, a French state-owned company that provides power to French Guiana. The station is expected to produce an estimated 420 million kilowatts and meet the needs of roughly 7,000 power customers over the next two decades.
Almost 200,000 people live in French Guiana, a French territory on the northern tip of South America.
