Free Microsoft Office Software Now Available for VGCC Students

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) HENDERSON, N.C., Sept. 22 -- Vance-Granville Community College issued the following news release: Vance-Granville Community College is now providing students with popular software at no charge, thanks to a partnership with Microsoft's Office 365 "Student Advantage" program.

Currently-enrolled students with VGCC e-mail addresses will be able to obtain the Office 365 ProPlus package, a version of Office that includes the latest editions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, InfoPath, Lync, OneNote, Outlook and Publisher. Students can install the latest version of Office on up to five PC or Mac computers as well as on up to five iPads or other tablet devices, although Outlook, Access and Publisher are available on PCs only.

Students will also have access to "OneDrive for Business," which is a cloud-based service that provides one terabyte (TB) of storage, allowing them to save their work online and access it later on a different device.

"This new initiative is all about supporting our students so that they can achieve success in the classroom and ultimately in their careers," said Dr. Ken Lewis, VGCC's vice president of institutional research and technology. "Vance-Granville students can now have some of the world's most popular and useful software tools for free, which will not only save them money but also improve their productivity." Lewis noted that the same type of software is used by VGCC faculty and staff. Students who take advantage of the program will also find it easier to collaborate with classmates using the same software. According to a 2013 study by International Data Corporation, students with Microsoft Office skills are better prepared for work in the professional world.

Students can keep the subscription-based software and storage as long as they remain enrolled at VGCC and as long as the program continues.

To obtain Office 365 ProPlus and OneDrive for Business, students must visit Office.com/GetOffice365 and follow the instructions found there. When prompted, students will sign in with their VGCC e-mail address and password. On the download site, students will select their language and click "Install." Students will not need to be connected to the Internet all the time to use Office 365 ProPlus, but they must connect to the Internet at least once every 30 days. This is so that the status of their Office 365 subscriptions can be checked.
