Fraud official gets four years [DFA (South Africa)]

(DFA (South Africa) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) FORMER South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) official, Attie Bambani, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for fraud involving an amount of more than R800 000.

An application by Bambani to appeal his sentence was turned down and in terms of Article 276 (1) (i) of Act 57 of 1977, which deals with mandatory and minimum sentences, he will be required to serve at least eight months of the sentence.

Bambani, who is no longer employed by Sassa after he resigned following his arrest, used the passwords of other officials to channel funds from Sassa into his private banking account.

He is seen here talking to his legal reprepresentative, Mark Fletcher, at the Kimberley Magistrates' Court yesterday.
