Fraud case: Jail avoided

A Winchester woman who defrauded the state welfare system out of $2,500 was spared jail time recently after pleading guilty in Cheshire County Superior Court.
Tabatha N. Winship, 29, of 225 Ashuelot St., Ashuelot, was sentenced March 27 on the Class A misdemeanor charge of welfare fraud.
She was sentenced to a year in jail, all suspended, and was ordered to pay restitution of $2,500. She was also placed on probation for two years.
The fraud occurred between September 2009 and May 2010, according to court documents.
A charge of theft by deception related to the case was dismissed by prosecutors.
In other recent Superior Court cases:
u Markus J. Walker, 34, whose address is listed as the Cheshire County jail in Keene, pleaded guilty to driving after being certified as a habitual offender of motor vehicle laws from October 2011 in Swanzey, and was sentenced to a year in jail, with credit for 154 days served while awaiting resolution of his case.
He was placed on probation for two years and fined $500 plus court fees, all suspended, and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.
u Craig Miettinen, 39, of Winchester was sentenced to six months in jail for violating his probation for assault and witness tampering from 2007. He was credited with 62 days served, and drug and alcohol counseling was recommended.
u Joseph Butts, 21, of Springfield, Vt., was sentenced to six months in jail, all suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to misdemeanor interference with custody from July 2010.
He was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
u Sean Raney, 26, of Alstead was sentenced to a year in jail with three months suspended for misdemeanor theft from October 2011. He admitted stealing prescription medicine. He was credited with 138 days served while awaiting resolution of his case and ordered to pay $135 restitution.
He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal threatening in connection with the incident and was sentenced to a year in jail, all suspended, and consecutive to the theft sentence.
He was placed on probation for two years upon release from jail, and was ordered to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation.
A charge of robbery was dismissed by prosecutors.
u Erin Carpenter, 24, of 26 Edwards St., Keene, was sentenced to a year in jail, all suspended, after pleading guilty to forgery from June 2011. She was ordered to pay $220 in restitution and was placed on probation for three years and ordered to tour the N.H. State Prison.
She pleaded guilty to a second forgery charge and was sentenced to two to four years in state prison, all suspended, and consecutive to the other forgery sentence. She was ordered to pay $330 restitution, plus court fees.
She also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft and was sentenced to 60 days, all suspended for three years.
A third forgery charge was dismissed by prosecutors.
u Brent C. Warme, 41, whose address is listed as the Cheshire County jail, was sentenced after pleading guilty to four counts of forgery and a charge of receiving stolen property.
He was ordered to serve 10 months in jail, with credit for 179 days served while awaiting resolution of his case. He was also sentenced to 21/2 to five years in prison, all suspended, and consecutive to the jail sentence. He was placed on probation for two years and ordered to pay restitution totaling about $787, plus court fees.
Additional charges of forgery and theft were dismissed by prosecutors.
u Jesse Snelling, 28, of Alstead was sentenced to a year in jail, all suspended, after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute from February 2011.
Snelling was credited with eight days served while awaiting resolution of his case, and placed on probation for two years. Snelling was fined $500 plus court fees.
u Justin C. Cole, 19, of Winchester was sentenced to nine months in jail for violating his probation from a 2010 theft conviction. He was credited with 176 days served while awaiting resolution of his case. He also pleaded guilty to criminal threatening from August 2011 and was sentenced to a year in jail with three months suspended. He was placed on probation for two years and ordered to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation.
A charge of robbery was dismissed by prosecutors.
