FOUR FOUND DEAD AFTER 7.7 EARTHQUAKE IN BUOL

Four people were found dead in the district of Buol, Central Sulawesi, following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake at around 01.00 hours Monday in the region.

Buol district administration spokesman Syamsuddin S Mangge told ANTARA Monday evening, about one thousand houses, school buildings and mosques were damaged in the temblor.

"This is only an initial data as data collection is still going on," he said by mobile phone.
He said local officials were now busy distributing food and medicines to evacuees numbering thousands who had fled for fear of tsunami or because their houses had been destroyed.



The four dead victims were identfied as Rahman Ta'u (41), a resident of of Lonu village who died after the wall of his house fell on him, N.Te'u (35) from Buol who died of serious trauma, Arifin (45) a resident of Mode village who died under the debris of his collapsed house and another person, a resident of Kali village whose name was not yet known.

Syamsuddin said five sub districts had been hit the hardest but the damage did not make them isolated.


The epicenter of the tectonic quake was at 1.41 degrees northern latitude and 122.18 degrees western longitude, at a depth of around 10 kilometers and less than 50 kilometers north of Paleleh sub district in Buol district, Central Sulawesi.
