Former U.S. Attorney and First Director of FBI's Terrorist Screening Center to Lead Guidepost Solutions' D.C. Office


Guidepost Solutions, a global leader in compliance, investigations and risk management, named Donna A. Bucella to head its Washington, D.C. office succeeding John P. Torres after he was named chief operating officer of the firm's Security and Technology Consulting group. Bucella will provide overall leadership to the D.C. office and strategic guidance to support its continued business growth. In addition, the firm's D.C. office welcomed Erin Zavalkoff as a managing director to focus on regulatory compliance, anti-corruption, and due diligence matters.

Bucella joined Guidepost Solutions in November 2015 as president of its Compliance practice and will continue in that role. Previously, she was senior vice president, risk and compliance, and chief compliance officer for the Education Management Corporation. She practiced law with Foley & Lardner LLP and Steel, Hector and Davis LLP and served as senior vice president at Perot Systems Government Services and Bank of America.

Bucella is the former U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida and served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Director of the Office of Legal Education for the U.S. Department of Justice, and Director of the Executive Office for the United States Attorneys. Her additional government experience includes serving as Assistant Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Intelligence and Investigative Liaison; being selected the first Director of the FBI's Terrorist Screening Center; and joining the U.S. Transportation Security Administration after 9/11 as the first Southeast Area Director. She retired with the rank of Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves. Bucella is a member of various organizations serving in an advisory capacity or as a member of its Board of Directors. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards, decorations, and military medals. Bucella received a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia.


Previously, Zavalkoff was an associate managing director at Exiger. She advised the HSBC Compliance Monitor and reviewed and assessed the Bank's financial crime investigative function and risk control framework for correspondent banking and U.S. Dollar clearing activity. She held a similar position at Kroll performing anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance-related investigations, conducting risk assessments and preparing business continuity plans. Earlier in her career, Zavalkoff was an associate at several prestigious law firms in New York and began her career as an investigative journalist. She also served as an Intelligence Officer for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

Zavalkoff attended McGill University where she received degrees for a Bachelor of Common Law, a Bachelor of Civil Law, and a Bachelor of Arts. She is admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York; U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York; and the New York State Bar.
