Former Fort Gibson town attorney investigated

FORT GIBSON, Apr 14, 2011 (Muskogee Phoenix - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Police confirmed reports Thursday about an ongoing internal investigation targeting the town's former attorney.

Donald Lewis tendered his letter of resignation Monday afternoon. Law enforcers launched their investigation of Lewis earlier that day.

"On April 10, I became aware of the alleged misconduct," said Interim Police Chief Brandon Combs. "I began an internal investigation of those allegations on April 11." Citing concerns about confidentiality and the ongoing investigation, Combs declined to give specifics about the nature of the allegations.

According to Kathy Carson, the town administrator, Lewis has been under contract as the Fort Gibson town attorney since January 2007. Carson said Thursday she knows nothing about the investigation or alleged misconduct.

It was Carson who told town trustees about Lewis' resignation, which, according to the letter, was effective immediately.

Calls to Lewis' Fort Gibson and Tulsa offices went unanswered. No response was received to an email sent to an address Lewis listed on his information on file with the Oklahoma Bar Association.

Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore said he had heard of Lewis' resignation.

"I do not have any reports that have come into this office," Moore said Thursday. "So at this time, I cannot comment on anything." Reach D.E. Smoot at (918) 684-2901 or dsmoot @muskogeephoenix.com.
