Former airport worker gets 8-month prison term in laptop theft

Jan 28, 2012 (The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A former federal Homeland Security agent convicted of stealing an airline traveler's laptop computer was sentenced to eight months in prison Friday.

Authorities said Ricky German, 49, took the $1,200 Apple Macbook laptop from a baggage claims area in December of 2010 at the Memphis International Airport.

German was seen on security video taking the owner's papers from the laptop case and throwing them in the trash. He then placed the laptop under a vacant ticket counter and later wrapped it in his coat and took it back downstairs.

German, who was an employee of the federal Transportation Safety Administration, said he had the laptop and that he was looking for the owner.

According to an affidavit, the owner said he asked German twice if anyone had turned in the laptop and that both times German said no. When told that security surveillance would be reviewed, the affidavit said, German put the coat and laptop down on a bench and then said he had found it.

Federal prosecutors argued that German not only intended to steal the laptop, but also that he lied to investigators and on the witness stand last October in an effort to cover up his actions.

He was sentenced by U.S. Dist. Court Judge Jon McCalla.
