Football: San Angelo Central makes an offer: Bobcats offer football job to Alice ISD's Davis

Jan 18, 2009 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Brent Davis said San Angelo Central has offered him its head football coach and athletics coordinator position, but he said Saturday he does not know whether he will accept it.

Davis, the head coach of Class 4A Alice located near Corpus Christi, said he was offered the job Thursday but he will likely decide Monday whether he'll take over at Central, which plays in District 2-5A, along with Permian and Odessa High.

"It's up in the air right now," Davis said. "I need to talk to my family about it and see what's best for us. ... I've got some things I need to get thought out that I haven't been able to yet."

San Angelo ISD, though, has planned a press conference Tuesday to announce a new coach and already placed an item on its school board agenda to vote on approving the coach during its meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. San Angelo ISD athletic director Doug McCutchen could not be reached for comment Saturday.

McCutchen told the San Angelo Standard-Times on Thursday that a coach had been offered the position and accepted it. McCutchen did not reveal the coach's name to the Standard-Times.

The salary for the Central job is budgeted for $95,623.
Davis, who was not on the list of applicants given by the San Angelo ISD to the Odessa American on Friday, has gone 31-12 in four years at Alice. The Coyotes, who play in District 31-4A, went 12-1 before losing to Lake Travis in the Class 4A Division I regional round last season. They also won their first district title since 1985.

Davis has a career record of 101-57-2 at Banquette, Sinton, The Colony and Alice. He led Sinton to a school-record 14 wins and a Class 3A state runner-up finish in 2001. An Angelo State University graduate, Davis also ended a 22-year playoff drought at Banquette.

Brent Davis' brother, Brad, is the head coach at Class 4A Wolfforth Frenship. Their father, Bobby, won 247 games as the Frenship head coach from 1981 through 2005 before Brad took over.

Central looked for a coach after the Bobcats, under Steve Heryford, went 0-10 last season. Heryford was 11-22 in his three-year tenure from 2006 to 2008.
