Flu shot distribution program goes smoothly

Nov 20, 2009 (The Frederick News-Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Those who did not get a vaccination for the H1N1 flu Thursday have a chance at getting into another flu clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

Call the Frederick County Health Department's flu vaccination line or register online. The health department used a new lottery system Thursday for the latest round of flu shots. The names of those who have registered go into the lottery for a future flu clinic. There is no need to make repeated calls for an appointment. There is also a phone line for Spanish speakers.

On Thursday, 904 people had appointments for vaccine shots, community health educator Angela Blair said.

"The feedback we have received from clinic attendees has been overwhelmingly positive," Blair wrote in an e-mail.

"We expect the public may also appreciate the option to register online as well as by phone," she said.

"If you are registered, once we know we have enough vaccine for a clinic, we randomly draw a list of registrants and then begin calling those registrants to offer an appointment," Blair said.

The flu clinic will be held at the Church of the Redeemer, 5606 Buckeystown Pike.

The system prevents people from having to wait outside in line for their shots.

The quantity of flu vaccine available is still limited, although officials expect supplies will increase in coming weeks. The health department is asking that only people in priority groups get vaccinated. As the flu vaccine becomes more available, people outside the priority groups will be able to get vaccinated at the flu clinics.

After Monday, the next flu clinic is tentatively set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 3, depending on availability.

The health department chose Plum Voice to handle its registration, using advice from the county's information technology and emergency preparedness staff.

The system collects and organizes registrations, draws a random list and forwards the list to the health department's call center. Calls are then made to offer appointments.
