'Fixed telephony access on the increase in Portugal'
(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The number of fixed telephony users in Portugal totalled 4.06 million at the end of June, up 0.5 percent on the end of March and 0.1 percent more than in the same period last year. According to regulator Anacom, the growth was partly due to new subscriptions to the multi-play offers from Zon/TV Cabo. Fixed-line penetration reached 38.2 accesses per 100 inhabitants. Portugal had around 34,400 installed payphones at end-June, down 2.4 percent quarter-on-quarter and 14.6 percent year-on-year. Portugal Telecom had a 66 percent market share for direct access to the fixed telephony service, down by 1.2 percent versus the end of March and by 3.1 percent from a year ago. Sonaecom ranked second with a 15.7 percent market share, followed by Zon/TV Cabo group with a 7.9 percent market share. At end-June, over 3.5 million fixed voice customers used direct access, up by 1.8 percent versus March and up by 2.6 percent versus the year-earlier quarter. Indirect access, via pre-selection, dropped 7.7 percent in the quarter to 159,000 users, the lowest figure since 2001. Year-on-year the drop was 28.4 percent. Total voice traffic originating on the fixed network during the second quarter was 2.02 billion minutes, resulting from 641 million calls. In comparison to the previous quarter, the volume of minutes and volume of calls dropped by 1.7 and 1.8 percent respectively.
