When In Doubt, Get Technical (By Dr. Joe Duarte) By the time this one
gets out to cyberspace, we may know who the new president of the United
States might be. But that knowledge may or may not help us to decide
whether the stock market will move higher or not. In fact, the only
thing that is certain is that the market will fluctuate. Beyond that,
the stock market seems to have put in a bottom. All the usual technical
stuff is in place. There was lots of panic in mid-October when the
bottom was put in place. And every day there is a rally, the usual
pundits, talking heads, and analysts are talking about being cautious.
It's good when markets climb walls of worry. Of course, these are the
same guys that a few weeks ago were issuing buy ratings on Washington
Mutual and Lehman Brothers, which of course is comforting to those of
us who actually trade real money and who don't get paid unless someone
actually makes money from our analysis and recommendations. The point
is that tomorrow the sun will rise, and barring any major disaster that
occurs overnight in Asia and Europe when the election results are
fairly well in place, stocks will do what the majority of those who
have to put their money where their mouths are want them to do. And,
unless something changes, the technicals of this market are quite
positive, with the potential of a rally into the end of the year still
seeming to be a viable outcome. What if we're wrong? Well, that's what
short selling is all about, making money when the market goes down.
It's called trading, folks. It ain't brain surgery. It's about making
educated guesses, taking prudent risks, being humble when you miss, and
being smart enough to never put all of your eggs in one basket or
expect a free ride from anybody.
