Conference calls are often impacted by market trends, geopolitical
conditions, news coming from conferences and economic releases.
(By Dr. Joe Duarte) The world of quantum physics and the stock market
are rarely intermingled. Yet, the action in the stock market over the
last few days is a classic example of such an occurrence. To physicists
and anyone who agrees with them, this scribe included, Chaos, is
normalcy. It is the ebb and flow of activity of daily life, and of
prices in the stock market, as long as they stay within a channel. This
is what is known as non-linear order. The critical point in Chaos is
what's called the Edge, or that area where activity, or non-linear
order, breaks out of the normal state. The Edge is better known as the
Edge of Chaos. When activity breaks out, or goes beyond the Edge, Chaos
is no longer in control, and the activity falls into Disorder. If the
activity takes place in a Complex System, such as the stock market,
where multiple individual variables act in response to their own
pursuits, it is by definition self-adjusting, and eventually Chaos will
return, albeit at a new level, and activity will once again be
"normal," meaning that it will fall back from Disorder into Chaos. This
is what happens when prices break below key support levels but
eventually find new support levels, build bases, and start new
advances. What we've seen since October 19 has been an exacerbation of
Chaotic behavior, with prices having corrected from the upper Edge to
the lower Edge of the trading range, with support being somewhere
around the 1410 area on the S&P 500 and the 200-day moving average of
the Nasdaq Composite and the Nasdaq 100. What we may have seen on
November 26 and 27 was the testing of the lower Edge of Chaos and the
failure of the market to tip into Disorder. Time, now, is the key. With
the most bullish period in the market straight ahead, the months of
December and often January, a few more days of positive action might be
good enough to send stock prices significantly higher, if the recent
support levels hold. If the Edge, or the 1410 or so, level of the S&P
500 folds, though, we will likely see significantly lower prices before
a meaningful bounce develops. It's a good time to be very vigilant in
the stock market, because a buying opportunity might lie just ahead.
The flip side is that a shorting opportunity might also be ahead. Soon
enough, we will know.
