(By Philip Holmes) Stocks ended mixed on Wednesday as news of the
continuing credit crunch dampened the effects of some good news on
manufacturing activity. Investors did have some good news to mull at
mid-week, some of it expected, some not. July factory orders showed a
surprise 1.3% gain for July. Investors were less surprised by a sharp
drop in crude oil prices this week. Hurricane Gustav had, after all,
failed to live up to his billing as Son of Katrina. All of this might
have led to a bounce in equities, but alas, the Fed chimed in with some
worrying data. The Federal Reserve's Beige Book confirmed fears that
the U.S. credit crisis isn t going away in time for the Fall. Among the
Fed districts polled in the data, most reported that demand for loans
had dropped while all the districts reported that loan standards have
tightened. Banks are working to shore up their finances, and both
consumers and businesses can expect that credit will be neither as easy
to get nor as cheap, as was the case in recent years. The credit crunch
is nationwide, and it isn t going away any time soon. Economists polled
by Bloomberg are looking for annualized rates of growth of 1 percent
in the third quarter and 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter. Sales of
houses and vehicles remain dismal, and more than 460,000 Americans have
lost their jobs since January. But cheer up. We re told that a really
big political season is upon us, and that such issues as lapel pins and
arctic teenage family planning are at the top of our collective
concerns. Things can t be all that bad, right?
