Conference calls are often impacted by market trends, geopolitical
conditions, news coming from conferences and economic releases.
Poverty Effect (By Philip Holmes) Stocks ended sharply lower on
Wednesday as investors digested bad news on corporate earnings. The Dow
lost 514.45 to end the trading session at 8,519.21, while the Standard
& Poor's 500 index dropped 58.27, for 896.78. The Nasdaq composite
index shed 80.93 to close at 1,615.75. The Dow had been down as much as
698 points in the last hour of trading, and Wednesday's loss follows a
231 point loss on Tuesday. What has investors spooked is the prospect
of a third quarter earnings season that will be disappointing by the
numbers, but that will leave as many questions as answers. BusinessWeek
calls it The Lost Earnings Season.? The paper reports that investors
aren't being given reasons for optimism from vague and lackluster
company predictions. Around 136 members of the S&P 500 index are
reporting earnings during the week of October 20, with 114 more
reporting next week. The problem investors have interpreting the
results is simple: this year's third quarter results cover July,
August, and September; the credit crunch reached crisis proportions
after the summer months. This means that data for the first two-thirds
of the period is effectively useless in gauging performance going
forward. This week's round of earnings calls already has a poster child
in the financial sector: Wachovia reported a staggering $23.9 billion
third-quarter loss on Wednesday. The bank is in the process of being
bought by Wells Fargo. In addition to the Q3 trauma, Wachovia said it
expects to lose another $26.1 billion of mortgage-related losses next
year. Lousy news continued, from Boeing and Merck who, like Wachovia,
turned in terrible third quarter results and bleak expectations for the
near future. The tech sector looked in slightly better shape, with
Apple, at least, turning in some decent numbers. All of this plays out
as certain of the fundamentals are improving. Oil prices are down below
$70, which should, among other things, lead to lower prices at the pump
and help consumers free up cash for the holiday season. Credit
conditions are easing as well: Three-month Libor is down for the third
day this week. The U.S. dollar is stronger against the pound and the

euro, while a bit weaker against the yen. The trend is favorable to
American consumers in that it brings down certain prices, but it's a
slim reed to breathe through. Consumers are feeling the poverty
effect? from falling house prices and fears of mass layoffs.
