Conference calls are often impacted by market trends, geopolitical
conditions, news coming from conferences and economic releases.
(By Dr. Joe Duarte) The S&P 500 continued to play cat and mouse with
the increasingly important 1260 level, using the chart point as a
spring from which to whipsaw bulls and bears on a daily basis. But you
wonder if anything was actually accomplished other than a whole bunch
of trading got done. If you re one of those that thinks that the
markets can sort things out better than the politicians, you're
probably right, at least eventually. The problem is that for now it
doesn't seem as if traders have any better ideas than those in
Washington, which is why we keep getting these crazy swings on news and
the action in other markets, bonds, currencies, and especially oil. So
we decided to look at the mainstream arguments for why things are the
way they are in the markets, and then compare them to what the charts
are saying. Let's go around the horn here, starting with the S&P 500.
This index is as good a picture of the U.S. stock market as any. And as
we've noted ad nauseum lately, the key to success is what happens at
1260. Well, we re back above 1260, at least for one day. This one goes
to no one as nothing was accomplished. Next we have inflation due to
the price of oil and commodities. And there's high demand in China for
everything. And there are food riots in the street in what was once
called the Third World. You bet. But gold has stalled, with the $1000
area laughing at traders who've barely hit it once in the last few
months. That's one for the confused. So we move on to oil. Peak oil is
in full swing. There aren't enough refineries. Iran is saber rattling.
Putin is kicking out foreign oil companies from Russia. Chavez is
buying an arsenal from Putin. And the envelope...please...Wow!! Oil is
still off 16% off its highs, according to some because some guys in
Oklahoma were playing games with derivatives. That's one for the where
did that come from crowd. OK, but global demand for raw materials will
continue until the end of time because the developing countries can't
be stopped, and China is the little red engine who could, and India is
a juggernaut. But the price of copper is floundering. That's one for
the denial crowd. And if the world is going into recession, then why is
the U.S. Ten Year Note yield not falling off a cliff? That's one for
the smart money is short bonds crowd. In other words, this market,
the whole thing, stocks, commodities, bonds, gold, and industrial
minerals is saying many things, which really amount to one thing: no
one really knows what the heck is going on, and that usually means that
there s more trouble ahead. When intermarket analysis leaves you more
confused than when you started, you're in big trouble, as it means that
money can't decide where to go. And that means more volatility, more
whipsaws, and more blood letting from your portfolio if you're not
careful and nimble. So, the most sensible place for your money and
ours, at this point is in cash, which is where much of our portfolios
will have you if you note the very few picks in each section. It's
still about the return of, not on, your money.
