(By Genevieve Hawkins) Wall Street finally broke out of its doldrums
last week as oil fell off of its record highs and earnings reports came
in slightly better than expected. Despite bad numbers with the slowing
economy the Dow surged 3.57%, while the S&P rose 1.95% and the Nasdaq
increased 1.71%. Many investors are likely hoping that the snapping of
the five week long market losing streak is the first sign of a possible
upturn, but there are too many headwinds and too much that hasn t
turned positive to expect a long rally. Earnings season is in full
swing, and traders will likely be watching results from Bank of
America, Yahoo, and American Express in the coming week. Investors will
also be digesting data about existing home sales, new home sales, and
the Federal Reserve s beige book. Ultimately, however, more may depend
on the direction of crude oil, as another drop almost guarantees a
brief rally, while a return to record highs could lead to more sell
offs regardless of other numbers. Stocks may surge forward provided the
data and the prices aren t horrific, even if the rally proves
short-lived
