conditions, news coming from conferences and economic releases.
(By Genevieve Hawkins) Stocks were led down last week by Thursday s 300
point drop, and with mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under
government control the markets are standing on a ledge staring into a
bottomless pit. The coming several sessions are likely to contain so
much news, coming from so many directions from the impact of the
Fannie/Freddie takeover, to the reaction from overseas markets, to the
impact of Hurricane Ike and the price of crude oil that it is almost
impossible to determine what force is going to dominate. Regardless of
the cover story, none of the news looks good. Last week a slump in
crude oil and an increase in unemployment led the Dow down 2.79%, while
the Nasdaq dropped 4.72% and the S&P 500 dipped 3.16%. For the coming
week economic reports of interest include those on August retail sales
and consumer confidence on Friday, but these may be easily overshadowed
by the barrage of other news. And all of this continues to compete with
non-stop election coverage. Too many forces seem to be conspiring
against the markets in the coming weeks, and it might be a good time to
sell and rethink positions. Barring heroic measures, a drop looks less
like a question of if but when.
