Fayette school bus window damaged by pellet

Feb 04, 2012 (The Register-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A plastic BB pierced the window of a Fayette County school bus Thursday afternoon, Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said. No students were injured.

"This does not appear to be an incident where children were in any type of danger," Kessler said. "Deputies are still investigating to determine if this was the result of an accident or an intentional act by someone, but there is no indication that any student or group of students on this bus was intentionally targeted for any act of random violence." The county's 911 center received a call at 3:07 p.m. that a window had broken out of the bus in the area of Miller Ridge Road at Hico. The bus driver reported hearing a loud noise.

Sheriff's deputies found a small hole in the corner of one of the windows, but were unable to determine what had caused the damage. They then found several small plastic Air-Soft pellets -- plastic projectiles similar to BBs -- beside the road.

Neither the students nor the driver reported seeing anyone beside the road with a pellet gun.

Another bus was sent to pick up the students, and the damaged bus was taken to Fayetteville for repair.

"Air-Soft pellets are made of plastic and are nonlethal," Kessler said. "They are even used in law enforcement training for role-play exercises. At extremely close range these pellets can cause minor injury and property damage ... If we are able to determine that this was an intentional act and identify a suspect, then that individual may well face a misdemeanor charge of destruction of property." Cpl. J.R. McMullen and Deputy R.D. Stephens are still investigating the incident. They encourage anyone with information to contact them at 304-574-4216. A tip may also be submitted through the Crime Tips section of the sheriff's website, www.fayettesheriffwv.net.
