Experts Gather in Oman for Global Forum on Internet Security

(Al Bawaba)Muscat will play host to one of the regions most substantial gatherings of international technology security experts this week, as companies in the region look to enhance overall strategies through a range of technical, organizational and regional measures.

The meeting will bring together experts from a range of fields, including academics, senior business people and security law experts to discuss the sharp rise in virus and hacker activity experienced in 2005 and possible ways to combat the impact in the coming year.

Specialists from leading security company Trend Micro will speak at the event, bringing new evidence from TrendLabs, its global network of antivirus laboratories, about the spread and development of viruses within the region.

"The conference offers us an important opportunity to take stock of the ongoing fight against malicious software activity and to look at the areas where cross-enterprise activity can help to reduce the speed of virus infections and hacker impact," said Justin Doo, managing director, Trend Micro Middle East and Africa.

"Muscat Municipality should be congratulated for their vision in hosting this conference, because reducing the impact of malicious software will not only help companies to improve efficiencies, it will also have a positive effect on everyone who uses computer technology," added Doo.

One of the major themes of the event is the role of information security in protecting individuals and families, extending the discussion from the usual economic and business debate through to examining the social impact of viruses, spam and theft of personal data.

To help families and home users protect themselves, Trend Micro has a dedicated free up-to-date on-line scanner on the Web - http://housecall.trendmicro.com which offers simple advice on safe computing practices and on reducing the risk of becoming infected or infecting others.

The company has significant experience in the Sultanate, providing protection for some of the largest enterprises, including Oman Air and Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).

"Towards secured digital transactions," will be held from 18 20 December 2005 at Al Bustan Palace Hotel, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.
