Ex-employee charged with embezzling $160G [Connecticut Post, Bridgeport]

(Connecticut Post (Bridgeport) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dec. 22--MILFORD -- A former employee of a software company here has been charged with embezzling more than $160,000 in company funds over a three-year period.

Lori Sturm, 35, of Talcott Street in Jewett City, will be arraigned Jan. 15 in State Superior Court in Milford on a single-count of first-degree larceny. According to the arrest warrant affidavit filed in court Monday, Sturm used an office typewriter at Objectif Lune to produce checks payable to herself.

The checks ranged from $500 to $850 and were written almost weekly from December 2006 until this June, the affidavit states. Sturm was in charge of making the company's bank deposits, and the forged checks were cashed on the same days that she made the deposits, Det. Richard Frawley wrote.

Company owner Robert Ricca told police an audit of the company's books going back four years indicates that $162,000 appeared to be missing. Frawley put the total at $165,150 in the arrest warrant application.

Investigators said Sturm bypassed the company's accounting software by using a typewriter to produce the checks, listing the stolen amounts as "in transit" when the checks already had cleared the bank.

Objectif Lune, at 5 Eastern Steel Road, is a private company with between 10 and 19 employees and an estimated annual revenue between $5 million and $10 million, according to Manta, a Web site that tracks businesses.

Ricca couldn't be reached for comment Monday. Sturm is free after posting a $75,000 bond.
