Energy Business Dept's chief downplays concern on fuel shortage

(FnWeb.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)fnWEB - Bangkok - April 26, 2006 - Energy Business Department Director-General Panich Pongpirodom shrugged off a concern over possible shortage of fuel in the country, affirming that the overall refinery capacity this year still outpaces that of last year, while the fuel demand has declined.

His affirmation came amidst reports that some oil service stations had run short of fuel or limited the sale of diesel oil to 500 baht per car.

He said the departments officials had surveyed many service stations and found that they had not run short of fuel for services.

All refineries in the country had run at their full production capacity; so, it should not have any problem of fuel shortage in the country, he noted.

He said local refineries had currently produced 922,000 barrels per day, compared with 909,000 barrels per day last year.

The fuel consumption in April declined to only 50 million liter per day, from 55 million liter per day in March.

He conceded that some oil service stations in greater Bangkok had shut down their operation because owners viewed their places are located in the center of the city and should be used for other commercial purposes that could gain more benefits.

For oil service stations located in provincial areas, he said, the officials had surveyed and found there are some which just opened and closed down.
