Ello Declares March "NSFW Month"

BURLINGTON, Vt., March 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ello, the ad-free social network, names March "NSFW Month." Throughout the month, Ello will celebrate freedom of speech by highlighting the suppressive role that censorship plays in social media, government, and the arts.

Ello Declares March, NSFW Month to celebrate free speech and a censor-free internet.

Those who believe in a censorship-free internet are invited to sign-up for Ello at https://ello.co/freedom-of-speech. They will receive an immediate invitation to join Ello, with a call to post content that symbolizes a stand against censorship on the Internet. Throughout the month Ello will highlight and promote posts by Ello users that represent the current fight for digital freedom of speech.

"While Networks like Google and Facebook waffle about what type of content should be allowed on their networks, Ello remains both censorship and ad-free," said Ello CEO and co-founder Paul Budnitz. "Since Ello is ad-free, there are no advertisers telling us what our community can and can't post. By naming March NSFW Month', we're demonstrating the world that you are free to post whatever you believe in on Ello. Different opinions are safe here."

This is a pivotal time for those fighting against censorship on the Internet. The recent announcement by Google that it would remove NSFW accounts from Google+ and Blogger (followed by their subsequent reversal), and recent controversies as Facebook more aggressively has begun to remove user content they deem inappropriate, has galvanized users who have realized that free speech is not guaranteed on advertiser-run social networks.

Ello does not censor or block NSFW content.

"We believe that freedom of speech is rooted in respecting other people's point of view. You may or may not want to see adult content so on Ello, you have a choice to view or hide NSFW content by simply ticking a box on the Ello settings page," explains Budnitz.

Ello is also developing tools that will allow users to import profiles and posts from other popular platforms, and which will be released soon.

"Ello NSFW Month" comes on the heels of Ello's conversion to a Public Benefit Corporation, which makes it legally impossible under US law for investors to force Ello to show ads, sell user data, or sell the company to a buyer who would violate any of those conditions.

The Ello web site launched in Beta on August 7, 2014 and has since attracted millions of users. The network remains invitation-only, with new features released weekly and native mobile apps due in early Spring.

About Ello:
