Earnings reports will fill the week

Oct 27, 2009 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Earnings season continues its run in Kansas City this week, with headliners appearing daily.

This morning's marquee features third-quarter results for Waddell & Reed Financial Inc., which is expected to show profits equal to 33 cents a share, according to analysts' estimates collected by Thomson Reuters.

Analysts' estimates typically are adjusted for discontinued operations, extraordinary items or other factors. They typically vary somewhat from net income as reported under generally accepted accounting principles.

Also today, UMB Financial Corp. is likely to report earnings of 49 cents a share, Thomson's estimates show. Compass Minerals International Inc., with an estimated profit of 70 cents a share, reports after markets close.

Wednesday begins with Euronet Worldwide Inc.'s earnings, which Thomson puts at 32 cents a share, and Mediware Information Systems Inc. After the close, Cerner Corp. is expected to report 61 cents a share in profits, Thomson said.

Cerner management will discuss the quarter and the outlook during a 3:30 p.m. conference call available at www.cerner.com or 617-213-8860.

Thursday brings a morning report from Sprint Nextel Corp., likely to be loss of 15 cents a share, according to analysts' estimates. Markets also will be attuned to Sprint's wireless subscriber totals during the first full quarter that the Palm Pre smartphone has been available.



Sprint's conference call is available at 7 a.m. at 800-938-1120 under the code 29897906.

Kansas City Southern also reports Thursday morning. Expect profits of 24 cents a share, according to Thomson.



After the close, Great Plains Energy Inc. should report profits of 68 cents a share. Westar Energy Inc. in Topeka also offers a look into the utilities world Thursday.

The week ends with YRC Worldwide Inc. reporting a likely loss of $1.70 a share before markets open, estimates show. Kansas City Life Insurance Co., Blue Valley Ban Corp. and Hawthorn Bancshares Inc. also may report Friday.
