DTAC puts emphasis on e-commerce market

Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC) will expand its digital market by adding more online shops to tap into the growth of e-commerce.
Simply designed webpages with a variety of attractive merchandise will be offered to allow customers to enjoy the convenience of online shopping, especially young people and upcountry consumers.
Tim Verouden, the head of DTAC's online department, said the growth of online shopping has been driven by more internet users in Thailand, where internet penetration has reached 34% of the population.
DTAC started its online channel two years ago.
The response has been so positive that it is continuously investing in the sector with the ultimate goal of drawing 2 million hits a month by the end of next year.
About 25% of visitors to its online shop at Rakuten's Tarad.com, the local e-market place, are mobile phone users.
At http://store.dtac.co.th, it sells products and services similar to those in DTAC shops such as devices and prepaid SIM cards.They are delivered by DHL, with PaysBuy its partner for electronic payments.
Last week, it launched iRefill as a full online refill process on its website.
"We will offer online postpaid subscriptions and make the online store available via smartphones soon," Mr Verouden said.
He said online revenue accounts for 10-20% of the total for telecom operators in Europe, but it may take a decade for Thai operators to reach that level unless online speed gets much faster.
True Corporation's online store is at http://store.truecorp.co.th.
Chief commercial officer Monsinee Nakapanant said the online store sells mobile phones, tablets and SIM cards.
It is able to reach 24 million internet users, mostly young people.
Some 35% of its customers are from the provinces.
"This online channel also saves operating costs compared with physical shops," Ms Monsinee said.
By next year's first quarter, True's online store will be able to support mobile devices and encourage customers to bundle data packages when buying devices.
True aims for 10% of its revenue from smartphones and tablets to come from online channels by next year.
Advanced Info Service opened an online shopping store www.ais.co.th/onlineshopping in May to sell devices and SIM cards to customers paying by credit card or mPay.
The store has quickly grown by 32% this year and is expected to grow by 35-40% next year.
Shares of DTAC closed yesterday on the SET at 86 baht, up 25 satang, in trade worth 181 million baht.
