DJ Nalco Chmn: E India Mine Still Shut As Workers Refuse To Work

NEW DELHI, Apr 21, 2009 (Dow Jones Commodities News Select via Comtex) -- National Aluminium Co. (532234.BY) has yet to restart production at its bauxite mine in the eastern state of Orissa as workers are still fearful, according to its chairman and managing director.

The Panchpatmali mine, which has an annual capacity of 4.8 million metric tons, was forced shut after an attack by Maoist rebels April 12.

"The state security has verbally communicated that work can start," C.R. Pradhan told Dow Jones Newswires late Monday.

"But production has not started. There is a fear psychosis among workers. They are not willing to come to work. We are talking to them to build their confidence," he said, but declined to comment on when production is likely to resume.
