DJ Indonesian Police Fire Tear Gas At Protesters Of US Mine
(Comtex Business Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)JAYAPURA, Indonesia, Mar 16, 2006 (Dow Jones Commodities News Select via Comtex) --Police fired tear gas on dozens of rock-throwing protesters demanding the closure of a U.S.-owned gold mine in Papua province Thursday, witnesses said. Several people were injured.
It was the third day of violent protests against the mine run by the New Orleans-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.
The clashes took place outside the campus of a major university in the provincial capital of Jayapura.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw several people with injuries sustained from flying rocks.
