(DIP) TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER TALKS GERMAN COUNTERPART ON PHONE

BERLIN, Jan 04, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) --
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan on phone to exchange views over developments in Gaza.

German Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Steinmeier told Babacan that it was necessary to put an end to rocket attacks targeting Israeli territories to provide a ceasefire in the region to initiate diplomatic efforts, and that all Muslim countries should take action to this end.

Steinmeier said that a border crossing should be opened in Gaza Strip and parties should reach a compromise to ensure a lasting truce and start a political process.

He added that if all parties give up acts of violence, the United Nations could send its observers to the region.
