Deutsche Telekom looking at options for T-Mobile USA
(M&A Navigator Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom (ETR:DTE) is studying a number of options for its T-Mobile USA unit, including a merger with a US competitor, sources in the know told the Wall Street Journal on Friday.
According to the sources, Deutsche Telekom is also considering for its US mobile operator an initial public offering, or a spinoff.
Some sources said a merger with a local player is less likely than the other two options, as it would meet with regulatory and technological obstacles.
A spokesman for Deutsche Telekom refused to comment when contacted by the paper. The German telecomms operator, however, told outsiders that it may reach a decision regarding T-Mobile USA within two months.
According to sources, Deutsche Telekom, constrained by the German government, controlling 30% in it, to fund T-Mobile USA, will most likely dispose of 20% of the unit to investors and keep the rest of the stock.
The paper cited analysts as saying that T-Mobile USA, ranking fourth in the local mobile market with a share of 14% and some 33 million clients, had a hard time keeping up with its rivals in recent years, as its wireless network is inferior and lacks reach.
