'Deutsche Telekom expands DSL coverage by 400,000 households'
(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
Deutsche Telekom has signed cooperation agreements for a DSL expansion
with around 400 municipalities during 2008. These include 300
communities, who contributed to the expansion, and 100 communities in
which broadband supply was possible without the contribution of
services by the municipalities themselves. As a result, around 100,000
households were given the opportunity to surf the internet at DSL
speed. Another 300,000 households were also supplied with DSL through
the standard expansion in 2008. Overall, Deutsche Telekom can now
supply 96 per cent of households with DSL lines. Compared to the
previous year, this is an increase of two percentage points. The group
invested EUR 300 million in the broadband expansion in 2008, of which
around EUR 100 million was specifically poured into closing up the
broadband "white spots" in the countryside. The CEO of Deutsche
Telekom's fixed/broadband division T-Home Timotheus Hoettges said that
the company will continue this year to work with any interested
municipality to look for solutions on how its citizens can obtain
broadband connections. If, despite cooperation opportunities,
households cannot be connected over the fixed network, there are
alternative solutions: E.g., DSL via satellite, which enables download
speeds of 1 Mbps. In addition, there are mobile solutions via
HSDPA/HSUPA and T-Mobile's full coverage EDGE network.
