Detroit Free Press Georgea Kovanis column: Black Friday secrets revealed early
Nov 22, 2008 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
It's sale season!
With anticipation swirling around Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, some stores are releasing their usually top secret day-after-Thanksgiving sale circulars early.
Meijer has already posted its ads for Thanksgiving Day (sale starts at 6 a.m.), Black Friday (sale starts at 5 a.m.) and the Thanksgiving weekend on www.meijer.com
Among the Black Friday doorbuster deals at Meijer, which for the second year in a row has posted its ads early:
--A Sylvania 22-inch LCD HDTV for $249.99, which is half the regular price.
--A Sylvania Blu-ray disc player for $149.99, which is $100 off the regular price.
And www.gottadeal.com said on Friday it received special permission from Wal-Mart to post the discounter's Black Friday ad early.
Among Wal-Mart's early bird specials:
--HP Pavilion Desktop with2GB RAM, 160GB HD and 19-inch LCD Monitor for $398.
--HP DeskJet F2210 All-in-One Printer for $295.
--Magnavox Blu-ray disc player for $128.
--Hannah Montana dolls for $5.
Meanwhile, Kohl's, which will open at 4 a.m. on Black Friday, said it will release its ad Tuesday -- two days before Thanksgiving -- on its Web site: www.kohls.com Already, though, it has revealed that doorbusters will include a high-definition video camera with accessories for $99.99, $100 off the regular price; and half off all toys.
J.C. Penney (opening at 4 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving) said it plans to release its Black Friday ad -- which the store says has 45 pages of door busters and is its biggest sale circular ever -- Tuesday on www.jcp.com.
Releasing the ads early -- usually they appear in Thanksgiving Day newspapers -- gives shoppers time to plan a strategy and creates buzz for retailers in need of an economic boost, especially since this holiday shopping season is expected to be quite dismal.
Meanwhile, Black Friday Web sites have obtained early copies of many of the day-after Thanksgiving sale circulars and have posted them online.

The ads on these Web sites have a history of being accurate, though stores sometimes make last-minute changes.

Anniversary markdown
And the sales just keep getting better.
In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Tender -- the high end designer store in Birmingham -- has marked its merchandise 50% off.
Hello Miu Miu, Jimmy Choo, Lanvin and the rest of the A-list designers.
The store doesn't usually do its 50% off sale until January but wanted to celebrate its anniversary with something other than a party.
