Dell Certifies 6WIND for NFV Infrastructure Acceleration and Virtual Network Functions

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- 6WIND, a high-performance networking software company, today announced that Dell certified 6WIND Virtual Accelerator™ as a standard product for its NFV (Network Function Virtualization) Platform starter kit. As part of the NFV Infrastructure (NFVI) on Dell servers, storage and networking, 6WIND Virtual Accelerator provides NFVI acceleration to deliver Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) with the required performance and functionality without any modification to existing software infrastructure, ensuring virtualized applications on the Dell platform rival legacy specialized equipment.

6WIND Turbo Router™ is also certified for Dell's NFV Platform starter kit as a high performance, ready-to-use routing and firewall software appliance to be deployed as a VNF.  For the best VNF performance and density, 6WIND Turbo Router can be easily integrated with 6WIND Virtual Accelerator and third-party VNFs.

During the certification process, Dell deployed 6WIND Virtual Accelerator on a Dell PowerEdge R630 rack mount server with a commercial OpenStack platform to compare performance and processor utilization in the KVM hypervisor domain. 6WIND Virtual Accelerator achieved 16 Gbps throughput while running on only one processor core in the hypervisor, delivering a 20x performance improvement over standard Linux, while saving over 95% of the system's processor capacity to run VNFs. 6WIND Virtual Accelerator scales linearly when adding cores, enabling high bandwidth to VNFs while reducing processor resources, versus standard Linux, which lacks scalable performance when adding cores.

6WIND Virtual Accelerator Key Features:

  • Industry's most feature rich NFVI acceleration software platform for virtual switching (Open vSwitch and Linux bridge), virtual networking and multi-tenancy (distributed routing, firewall, NAT, IPsec and mre) and overlays (VXLAN, VLAN and GRE)
  • Supports any VNF with standard Virtio drivers, including 6WIND Turbo Router
  • Transparent to existing software infrastructure with no change to Linux, Open vSwitch, OpenStack and SDN Controllers

6WIND Turbo Router Key Features:

  • Bare metal or VNF deployment
  • CLI, XML or Linux-based management
  • High performance, fully-featured data plane networking for routing, virtual routing, NAT, firewall and more
  • High performance control plane

6WIND Virtual Accelerator and Turbo Router deliver high performance I/Os leveraging DPDK with multi-vendor NIC support.

"6WIND Virtual Accelerator and Turbo Router enable NFV by delivering the performance, features and network hardware independence required for virtual networking on standard servers," said Eric Carmes, CEO and Founder of 6WIND. "With our certification on Dell's NFV Platform, we offer customers the required scalable NFV Infrastructure acceleration to run virtualized applications such as vEPC, enterprise vCPE, vIMS and our Turbo Router with performance similar to bare metal environments."

"With the transition to NFV, it is critical to ensure performance and functionality for virtualized applications," said Arpit Joshipura, vice president, product strategy and management, Dell Networking. "Combining 6WIND Virtual Accelerator and Turbo Router with Dell's NFV Platform gives customers a scalable platform for virtual networking to help increase application performance and functionality while reducing processing resources."
