Defense officers required to delete all secret data from private PCs+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, Feb. 24_(Kyodo) _ The Defense Agency said Friday all its officials and Self-Defense Forces members will be required to delete all peer-to-peer file-sharing software and any work-related confidential data stored on privately-owned computers to prevent data leaks via the Internet.
The measures, which also include a complete ban on using private computers to compile or store work-related confidential documents, are implemented in light of the discovery that confidential information such as cipher-related documents was leaked onto the Internet from a virus-infected computer owned by a Maritime Self-Defense Force member.
The agency launched a panel on Friday to discuss more long-term measures to prevent any further data leaks. The panel decided to set up three working groups to study details such as system maintenance and penalties and aims to hold the next meeting in two weeks, an agency official said in briefing reporters.
The agency, however, has not decided on the details of how the data deletions are to be carried out and how the agency is going to verify compliance, the official said.
Meanwhile, some 800 agency and SDF senior officials were called up Friday afternoon to hear a speech by agency chief Fukushiro Nukaga, who urged all officials to work hard to rebuild public confidence in the agency and the SDF which has been damaged by a series of recent scandals, including the data leak incident and alleged bid rigging.
"The foundation of our work at the Defense Agency and the SDF lies in the people's trust," Nukaga said. "We must deal with this situation head-on and regenerate the agency."
The MSDF said Thursday that confidential data including call letters for its vessels, cipher documents related to combat exercises and personal data on dozens of its members were leaked from an officer's computer onto the Internet via the file-sharing program Winny when the computer was infected with a virus.
