Datacard Group Receives U.S. Patents for Intelligent Supplies Technology and Error-Free Supplies Loading; New Technologies Enhance Value by Reducing Supplies Waste While Maximizing Ease-of-Use.

MINNETONKA, Minn. --(Business Wire)-- Feb. 28, 2006 -- Datacard Group, the world leader in secure ID and card personalization solutions, today announced that it has received patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its Datacard(R) Certified Supplies featuring Intelligent Supplies Technology(TM) and error free supplies loading, which, in addition to enhancing security, provide superior system performance and lower overall cost per card.

The two patents, 6,963,351, "Radio Frequency Identification Tags on Consumable Items Used in Printers and Related Equipment" and 6,997,629, "Supply Items for Printers and the Like, and Method of Loading Supply Items," are included in the 137 patents and 197 pending applications Datacard Group holds in the U.S. and abroad.

"These technologies go beyond system-matched supplies, providing customers with features that greatly reduce waste and help ensure that supplies loading is error-free," said Neil Crocker, vice president of marketing and product management for Datacard Group. "These new patents illustrate our ongoing commitment to the pursuit of new technologies that result in successful card programs for our customers."

Built into the easily identified Datacard blue cores with platinum flecks(R), Intelligent Supplies Technology allows ribbons, cleaning tapes and other supply items to communicate directly with Datacard systems and printers while ensuring they are properly loaded in the printer.

Intelligent Supplies Technology lowers the overall cost per printed card by conserving supplies. Additionally, the system monitors the amount of supplies remaining and alerts the operator to upcoming supplies changes. Lastly, supplies can be easily shared between multiple systems since all ribbon-specific information is continuously updated and contained within the supply item.

Error-free supplies loading eliminates the confusion and awkwardness of inserting new supplies into a printer. The unique Datacard supply cassette and cores work together to guarantee that supplies are properly installed in the printer with the least possible effort.

"Whether you're a school printing individual student IDs or a bank mass-issuing financial cards, the value of Intelligent Supplies Technology will clearly enhance your program's success," said Crocker.

Datacard Group offers the world's best-selling secure ID and card personalization solutions. The company's portfolio includes systems for high-volume card issuance, card delivery, secure ID issuance and passport production, plus extensive service and supply offerings. Datacard Group serves customers in more than 120 countries (www.datacard.com).
