Czech Senate says police action against techno music fest was inappropriate

The upper chamber of Czech parliament said Friday that the crackdown on a techno music festival last weekend was inappropriate.
Of the 70 legislators present in the 81-seat house, 36 senators voted in favor of a resolution that demands "a thorough and quick investigation" of the police action, while eight were against and 26 abstained, said Senate spokesman Petr Kostka.
The senators also asked Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek and Interior Minister Frantisek Bublan to submit the results of the investigation to them, he said.
On Saturday, some 1,000 riot police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse about 5,000 people attending the annual CzechTek electronic dance music festival, prompting widespread criticism from Czech government leaders and citizens alike.
Organizers of the festival had obtained permission to hold the event in a private meadow in Mlynec, a village about 130 kilometers (80 miles) west of Prague. But police said festival-goers were illegally entering private land outside the approved zone.
Opposition and government politicians, as well as former President Vaclav Havel, criticized the heavy-handed tactics. President Vaclav Klaus said those who had ordered the action had damaged the reputation of Czech police.
Separately, Czech police on Thursday set up a special team to investigate allegations of police brutality during the crackdown citing people's negative response to the police action.
