CT residents lose phone service
SPRINGFIELD, Jan 03, 2009 (The News-Item - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Some Coal Township residents were left without telephone service Friday when a truck attempting to turn onto Mohawk Street snagged a telephone line and ripped down three cables.
Phone service is not expected to be restored until at least Saturday, according toVerizon spokewoman Sharon Shaffer.
Residents without landline service needing emergency assistance have been instructed to go to the East End Fire Company, 25 Sherman St., to access phone services there.
"It sounded like my roof was falling in," said Kristina Banks, of 1755 Pulaski Ave., as the broken lines stretched and broke and fell from the 1700 block of Pulaski Avenue onto Sheridan Street. "I was taking my tree down when I heard a loud sound. I looked outside and saw a wire hanging from my roof. I didn't know what it was so I grabbed my daughter and ran to the kitchen."
Early Friday afternoon, according to Coal Township Police Department, a Waste Management truck ripped the wires down. The police were called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m., and Northumberland County Communications was informed soon thereafter.
Verizon workers could be seen working on a telephone pole across from Mohawk Street. Shaffer said the workers were going to work through Friday night and the repair work would be continued by another crew on Saturday, but no specific time was given about when the repairs would be completed.
Workers must hang up cable strands, splice wires together and put up a new terminal box on the telephone pole. Shortly before 6 p.m., Shaffer confirmed one cable had been hung.
"What's ironic," said Shaffer, "we had no trouble reports from customers." She speculated customers might have been using cell phones and didn't notice.
